Corvettes and Water Fowl

26 Apr

Many water-loving birds have returned to enjoy Blue Lake this spring.  A beautiful white and teal merganser swam and fished side-by-side with one with a pompous mohawk close to the shoreline.  A few seagulls were spotted scoping out the digs on Seagull Island.  The eagles have also been flying low over the free-flowing lake to their big West Basin aerie, likely taking stock of the fishing conditions.  A handful of loons wailed up a storm on Saturday night, crying incessantly for about 15 minutes around 9:30 p.m.

As for the corvettes, returning from a trip to the Hazelhurst Post Office on Saturday, I passed a rally of ’em, 20 strong, zipping down Lower Kaubashine Road.  I fondly recalled the strange Harley Davidson tour that roared over the Blue Lake Island bridge last fall – either lost or looking.
