State of the Lake: Not Frozen

4 Dec

Despite the major ice crusts almost entirely covering Blue Lake just a few days after Thanksgiving, despite reports that folks have already been testing ice fishing conditions on Northwoods lakes, despite this editor’s excitement and near-calling of the arrival of permanent ice on Blue Lake, Blue Lake remains, as of December 4, 2012, 2:30 p.m., unfrozen.

The big ice sheets which have formed and then disappeared this past week on both Blue Lake and Lake Minocqua have succumbed to mid-40-degree temperatures, and Blue Lake looks just as it did this summer – a sparkling blue pool. Upcoming lower temperatures may help Blue Lake reach full ice status as the lake still has positive indicators like small, sluggish waves and electrifyingly cold water right around the freezing point.

Look at this picture and wonder, does this lake look like it’s about to freeze?

I would say, no, but so far this season all my instincts have been wrong!

If I was not in Florida, I would consider re launching the Chris Craft and going water skiing. The lake might be cold but if I dont fall and wear a warm jacket and sweat pants I should be ok. I would need to have a spotter in the boat to make sure if I do fall, I can be pulled out of the water in a hurry

Dad, you forgot to mention that you would be wearing your Bears jacket, and your spotter would be Santa Claus!
